Hire Purpose has officially joined a growing community of 2700+ businesses in the UK that have pledged to ‘be better’, through certifying and achieving B Corp status.

Our Score:

95.5

Becoming a B Corp, however, is and should always be more than a status or badge.

At the very least, for a revenue-generating business, it’s an acknowledgment that while you make a profit, it should not come at all costs. At the other end of the spectrum, it’s a route that can shift the tide and radically transform how industries operate, all while tangibly enhancing the lives of people, communities and the planet that we all share.

Hire Purpose achieved a score of 95.5 (the median score for ordinary businesses is 50.9), demonstrating that we meet the high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, alongside a commitment to goals beyond shareholder value.

B Lab UK’s Impact Business Models (IBMs) form the frameworks which organisation can create even more positive benefits and outcomes.

While it isn’t a requirement, Hire Purpose decided to certify against two IBMs:

Serving Underserved Populations (Indirect)

B Lab identifies ‘underserved populations’ as groups which traditionally face social, economic, geographic, health, educational, or structural barriers.

As Hire Purpose is a business that strives to enhance social value in our work, where impact is embedded in our commercial model, this IBM reflects the beneficiaries of the services that our charity and non-profit clients exist to serve, and the socially impactful outcomes we help create.

  • Environmental defenders are individuals and communities who peacefully protect land, water, air, livelihoods, and human rights from threats such as extraction, pollution, and damaging development. They could be journalists, activists, indigenous people, NGO staff, and/or community leaders.

In 2024, Hire Purpose partnered with the Environmental Justice Foundation to lead a search to appoint a Global Programme Coordinator to lead and develop their Environmental Defenders programme. In this instance, the underserved populations are disempowered and disenfranchised rural fishing and seaside communities across the global south, whose lives are negatively affected by climate change and government policies which are ineffective at supporting livelihoods.

Over a 12-month period, the Global Programme Coordinator started a new programme and supported existing projects which have since trained:

    • 40+ NGO staff members across 6 NGOs

    • 79 fire fighters on how to use drones to monitor fires

    • 9 community volunteers on how to conduct effective turtle patrols.

    • 8 indigenous leaders in film, advocacy and storytelling

Grant recipients across 6 countries have also been supported to develop proposals for the subgrants that have since provided them with $200,000 in 2025, and 1.3 million USD in total for the next 2.5 years. They have also contributed to conceptualising a new project to support journalists and citizen communicators, securing an additional 2 million EUR grant; the programme is due to start later in 2026.

The programme is now starting new ED projects across Cameroon and the Philippines.

So that’s the delivery side, what about the impact?

    • 559,507 hectares of land directly protected by firefighters trained in 2025

    • 255+ turtles and hatchlings protected

    • 17 articles created by journalists sponsored, and 24 articles supported by EJF’s information

    • 4 VANs created based on DASE evidence, +100 cases of artisanal IUU fishing addressed, 7 alerts shared with government authorities, with the numbers of alerts increasing following the implementation of the new strategy.

Support for Underserved/Purpose Driven Enterprises

As Hire Purpose predominantly supports purpose-driven enterprises, this IBM was a natural fit for us.

From B Corps to micro-charities, national NGO’s to climate-tech start-ups, we are proudly defined by the organisations we partner with, and the missions and causes that we choose to support.

  • While originally founded in 1878, this national charity has evolved with the times and their mission is clear:

“To enable and inspire people from all backgrounds and abilities to experience cycling's joys and benefits.”

Hire Purpose intimately supported Cycling UK with the restructuring and subsequent recruitment of 8 appointments ahead of the launch of the charity’s 5-year strategy, which centres inclusion at its core.

Learn about their new strategy here.

Through campaigning for safer streets, better infrastructure, and fairer transport policy, they’re proactively making cycling safer for everyone while also collaborating with a broad mix of partners to deliver community-based programmes that support people of all ages and backgrounds to cycle, particularly those facing barriers due to income, health, disability, or confidence.

  • A practice whose culture and ethos challenges the status quo of their industry.

Outside of their B Corp certification, there are many indicators that reflect how Starfish is not only a purpose driven enterprise, buta responsible business that is inexplicitly human and which puts its people first.

Ahead of launching our first recruitment campaign with Starfish Accounting, Hire Purpose gathered feedback across the practice to better understand its people, and capture the essence of their culture.

Here’s what they had to say:

    • “Starfish always takes an individual approach to each client while paying real attention to every employee.”

    • “There is an atmosphere of trust and care, both for personal challenges and professional matters.”

    • “In terms of culture, I would highlight the strong sense of acceptance and the genuine appreciation shown to both employees and clients.”

    • “When I’m in the office, there is always a sense of openness and collaboration.”

    • “People are supportive, approachable, and willing to help each other.

    • “There is a positive, focused atmosphere, but also space for humour and human connection.”

These testimonials were then embedded within our candidate outreach, as well as the broader recruitment campaign, showcasing the sentiments of the people from within the practice and ensuring that we attracted people who felt an allignment with their culture.

Creating a culture that is supportive, inclusive, and human should be the standard, and Co-CEO’ Georgi & Emma have truly embodied this. Whether it’s your employees, clients, or suppliers, how your business treats its people speaks volumes.

  • As one of the UK’s leading arts institutions,Opera North is a major cultural destination that’s worked incredibly hard to challenge the idea that opera is only for affluent audiences, or people with a perceived privilege.

    How has it achieved this?

By valuing accessibility, community participation, and affordability, positioning these at the heart of their commercial packages and socially impactful programmes.

Since 2013, they’ve helped more than 14,000 people experience live opera via their Encore Ticket Scheme, which partners with more than 100 community organisations to provide free or heavily subsidised access to performances, workshops and cultural experiences for people who may otherwise face barriers to the arts. If you’ve never experienced an opera, you can also see a show for just £20 as a first-time attendee.

Music can be used as a tool for social mobility. It builds confidence, and it can develop and enhance communities. One of Opera North's most impactful community programmes, In Harmony Opera North, does exactly this by putting musical instruments into the hands of children who may never otherwise have an opportunity to play and learn an orchestral instrument, perform in an ensemble, or engage in high-quality creative education from an early age.

Take a look at the In Harmony programme here.

Around 3,200 children and young people from some of the most economically disadvantaged parts of Leeds and West Yorkshire participate every, single, week.

Opera North also thinks deliberately about how to ensure an inclusive audience experience. Through incorporating dementia-friendly, captioned, BSL interpreted and audio-described performances and by providing hearing loops, companion tickets, braille, and large-print materials, they’re venues are truly accessible.

In 2025, Opera North had a mystery shopper assess their entire venue through an accessibility lens, and guess what?

Flying colours, achieving a perfect score of 100%.

Hire Purpose is proud to have led a thorough search to headhunt their first Commercial Sales Manager. Tasked with maximising their revenue and diversifying income streams, they’re success is already expanding their offering as they continue thriving as a purposeful and socially impactful arts institution.

After IBMS -  How else are we supporting underserved and purpose driven enterprises?

Over the past 12 months, we’ve also adapted our pricing model for charities and non-profits, enabling them to access the same high quality and results driven service, but at far more accessible and realistic rates.

From ramped up rent, to sudden hikes in operational costs such as the increase to employers NI contributions, it’s no secret that in this current socio-economic climate, the charity sector is facing unprecedented financial challenges.

This isn’t just a ‘nice to have’ policy, it’s what we believe is needed to support the sector that acts as both a safety net, and a crucial backbone to society.

Our new pricing structure is made possible thanks to the successful partnerships we’ve undertaken with our commercial clients that are purpose-led businesses.

We are also proud to be a member of the coalition behind the Better Business Act, advocating to legally require every UK company to balance the interests of shareholders as well as our communities and the planet that we share.

Hire Purpose is also committed to having a positive impact on nature and the environment as a direct outcome of the work that we deliver.

Why we chose to certify

“My recruitment career kicked off in 2015, the same year that B Lab UK officially launched. Cutting my teeth and learning the tools of the trade in recruitment within the first agency in our industry to become certified definitely sparked something in me early on.

The concept that businesses can be a force for good and with prospects for greater societal and environmental impact simply made sense, and to be able to do this alongside a like-minded community was a no-brainer.

I knew that should the time come to start my own agency, that I’d actively consider and explore being part of the B Corp movement.”

Louis Eastwell, Founder
